Brit Boy update....
Okay, so he text messages at 8:30. EIGHT-THIRTY! "Just getting back into the city -sorry, lasted longer than i thought"Mom said that this communicating via text message stuff was bullshit, so I have to end it. Now. So I'm to call him back, instead of text messaging back. So, I called. Was a little scared, but he picked up, said it was a work thing, he couldn't get back sooner, he was only on the upper west side, still not home. I told him the wedding was SOOOOO fun, but it's okay we weren't getting together because I think I'm coming down with something (true!). He said he would call me tomorrow to see how I'm doing. CALL ME. So we shall see if he does or does not call tomorrow, and that should tell us what's going on, I guess.....

I hooked up with a Brit Boy myself while on holiday in England last summer. They do text messaging A LOT more frequently in the U.K. and continental Europe than we do. The guy I was seeing only had a phone to receive calls and send text messages. If they have a quick message (or hell, even a longer one), they text it. It's probably just how he's used to operating and he doesn't think anything of it or consider it bad behavior.
When did he come to the U.S.?
Hey Judy,
I know, that's true. But I would like to actually speak to him once in a while (that adorable accent!). He just moved here, 3 months ago....
*sigh*
I know- the accent's great, isn't it? Total turn-on. Wait until he starts saying dirty thing with that proper accent.....
I'm not really trying to excuse his not calling you- because he should. But he needs a teeny bit of slack because they do operate differently over there. He's only been here a little bit of time- I;d say give him a chance to get adjusted before writing him off entirely.
Besides, I'm sure you are just the lady to properly socialize him as to how things operate here in the US. And in NYC.
Judy is correct - the text thing here is massive. Some phones are sold on their "ease of texting" or come with a tarrif that is aimed at those who text often, free evening texting etc.
It's 100% normal behaviour for a Brit. The rumour is that babies are being born here with extra big and nimble thumbs as aresult of this obsession!
The other thing to remember is that the whole "dating" thing and how people get together is slightly different here.
I'm looking forward to hearing how it works out.
Andrew,
I know things are "different" -- anything I should be expecting?
He just texted again: Get well soon-we'll do something nice this week?
*sigh*
Sorry for slow reply.
As John Travolta says in Pulp Fiction : "It's the little differences"....
Over hear, a guy might ask a girl out for a date. If it goes well they might go on a second, third, etc. Then people just drift into a relationship. No one ever says - "Can we go steady" - it just happens and you accept that you are now "going out" with some one.
The fact that he has said he wants to go steady and be exclusive shows that he understands that the cultural differences exist.
Clearly he doesn't realise the texting/calling thing is another difference.
With regard to anything else you "should expect" - that's difficult to say without knowing him.
This may also sound strange to you - but there really are differences in social culture in the UK between North and South - which is a very sweeping statement, but any Brits reading this will appreciate the difference between a Friday night in Newcastle to one in Worthing!
Do you know where he's from originally?
Bristol. What does that mean??
Bristol eh? That's cool - I have family from there.
As a general and hugely sweeping statement (and at the risk of upsetting a huge chunk of the UK's population) male attitudes towards women and their role in life are more "traditional" the further north you go.
As he's from the south-west, his attidudes are more likely to be relaxed and liberal.
Sorry to any "Northeners" reading this!
